Heavy Rain and Flood Warnings Issued for Southern England and Wales
The National Weather Service has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across southern England and Wales, with the alert in effect from 8 a.m. on Sunday, January 26, until 6 a.m. on Monday, January 27. The warning comes as a period of heavy rain is expected to affect central and southern England, followed by thundery showers, with rainfall totals of 10-20mm widely expected and up to 30-50mm over higher ground. In some areas, particularly those exposed to south or southeast-facing slopes, as much as 80mm of rain could fall, raising concerns about localized surface water and river flooding.
The Environmental Protection Agency has already issued more than 100 flood warnings for parts of southern England, indicating that flooding is “expected” in these areas, along with over 260 flood alerts where flooding is “possible.” Swollen rivers are being closely monitored, with some at risk of overflowing their banks. The recent wet conditions, including melting snow from earlier in the week, have heightened the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
The National Weather Service has advised residents to prepare for potential disruptions, including difficult driving conditions, road closures, and possible power outages. Public transportation services, such as buses and trains, may also face delays or cancellations. Residents are urged to check if their properties are at risk of flooding and to prepare emergency flood kits. The agency also warned of the potential for fast-flowing or deep floodwater, which could pose a danger to life in some areas.
This weather follows a weekend of snow and freezing rain that caused widespread travel disruptions, including runway closures at several airports and delays across the transportation network. Temperatures are forecast to drop again from Monday, bringing widespread frost and the threat of ice, particularly in northern England. Rural communities in these areas could be cut off by snow, with further travel delays and power outages likely.
The public is advised to stay updated on weather warnings and to take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of unsettled weather.
