Houston Texans Part Ways with Offensive Coordinator Bobby Slowik After Two Seasons
The Houston Texans have made a significant change to their coaching staff, firing offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik after two seasons. The decision comes following a season in which the Texans’ offense regressed, despite reaching the AFC divisional round of the playoffs. Offensive line coach Chris Strausser has also been let go.
Slowik, 37, was instrumental in quarterback C.J. Stroud’s standout rookie season in 2023, helping him earn NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. However, in 2024, Stroud’s performance declined, with his interceptions more than doubling and his passing numbers dropping significantly. The Texans finished 19th in points scored and 22nd in total yards, a stark contrast to their top-12 rankings in both categories the previous season.
The Texans’ offensive struggles were compounded by injuries to key players, including wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, as well as inconsistent play from the offensive line. Stroud was sacked 52 times in 2024, the second-most in the league, and the team’s pass protection was a recurring issue throughout the season. Despite these challenges, the Texans managed to win the AFC South and secure a playoff victory over the Los Angeles Chargers before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round.
Slowik, who previously worked with head coach DeMeco Ryans during their time with the San Francisco 49ers, had been considered a rising star in the coaching ranks. Last offseason, he interviewed for several head coaching vacancies but ultimately remained with the Texans. This year, he interviewed for the New York Jets’ head coaching position but did not receive an offer.
The Texans are now tasked with finding a new offensive coordinator to help Stroud and the offense regain their 2023 form. Internal candidates for the role include quarterbacks coach Jerod Johnson and senior offensive assistant Bill Lazor, while external options such as New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak have also been mentioned.
The decision to part ways with Slowik underscores the high expectations for the Texans’ offense, which features a young, talented core led by Stroud. With the team aiming to compete among the AFC’s elite, the upcoming hire will be crucial to their long-term success.
