Pete Carroll Makes NFL History as the Oldest Head Coach with Las Vegas Raiders
Pete Carroll, the former Seattle Seahawks head coach, is set to make NFL history as the oldest head coach in the league. At 73 years old, Carroll has agreed to a three-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, with a fourth-year team option, making him the oldest active head coach in NFL history. Carroll, who turns 74 on September 15, 2025, will surpass Romeo Crennel, who served as interim head coach for the Houston Texans at 73 years and 199 days old.
Carroll’s return to the sidelines comes after a year as a senior advisor for the Seahawks following his departure as head coach after the 2023 season. During his 14-year tenure with Seattle, Carroll led the team to 10 playoff appearances, two Super Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl XLVIII victory in 2013. His 137 wins with the Seahawks are the most in franchise history.
The Raiders, who have struggled in recent years, are banking on Carroll’s experience and winning pedigree to turn the franchise around. Carroll’s hiring marks his fourth NFL head coaching stint, having previously led the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Seattle Seahawks. He is one of only three head coaches to win both a college national championship (USC, 2004) and a Super Bowl, alongside Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer.
Carroll’s age has sparked discussions, but his energy and track record suggest he is more than capable of handling the demands of the job. He will face a challenging AFC West division, competing against Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs, Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers, and Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos. The Raiders, who have not made the playoffs since 2021, are hoping Carroll’s leadership can help them find their next franchise quarterback and rebuild a competitive roster.
