Robert Saleh Reunites with San Francisco 49ers as Defensive Coordinator

Robert Saleh is set to return to the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive coordinator, marking a reunion with the team where he previously served in the same role from 2017 to 2020. The move comes after Saleh was fired as head coach of the New York Jets five games into the 2024 season, following a disappointing 2-3 start and an overall 18-33 record during his tenure.

Saleh had been a candidate for several head coaching vacancies this offseason, including interviews with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Dallas Cowboys, and Las Vegas Raiders. However, the Jaguars shifted their focus to Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who emerged as their top choice after initially turning down the job. This development allowed Saleh to pivot back to the 49ers, where he is expected to take over the defensive reins once again.

During his first stint with the 49ers, Saleh transformed the defense into one of the league’s elite units. By 2019, the 49ers ranked second in total defense, allowing just 281.8 yards per game, and reached the Super Bowl. His “all gas, no brake” philosophy became a hallmark of the team’s identity. Despite significant roster turnover since his departure, key figures like linebacker Fred Warner, defensive end Nick Bosa, and several assistant coaches remain, providing continuity for Saleh’s return.

The 49ers’ defense under Nick Sorensen in 2024 ranked eighth in total yards allowed but struggled with consistency, giving up the fourth-most points in the NFL. Saleh’s hiring is seen as a move to restore the unit’s dominance. The 49ers reportedly offered him a lucrative deal, making him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the league.

Saleh’s return to San Francisco could also position him for another head coaching opportunity in the future, depending on his performance in the upcoming season. For now, the 49ers are banking on his familiarity with the organization and his proven track record to revitalize their defense.
