Schiff's Mixed Feelings on Trump's California Wildfire Visit Amid Political Tensions

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) expressed mixed sentiments about President Trump’s visit to California to survey wildfire damage, stating he was “glad” Trump was going but unable to join due to Senate votes. Schiff, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, acknowledged the importance of the president witnessing the devastation firsthand. “Until you see it and the scope of it—whole neighborhoods gone block after block after block—it’s hard to wrap your head around,” Schiff said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

The invitation for Schiff and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) to accompany Trump came as a surprise, given the long-standing animosity between Schiff and the president. Schiff, who led the first impeachment of Trump in 2019 and played a key role in the Jan. 6 investigation, has been a frequent target of Trump’s ire, with the president recently referring to him as “scum.” Despite their adversarial history, Schiff emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation in addressing the wildfire crisis, stating, “This is a great opportunity to come together in the wake of this tragedy and show that we can work together—even while we may fight over other issues.”

However, tensions remain high. Trump, when questioned about Schiff’s potential presence on the trip, denied personally inviting him, saying, “I didn’t invite him. Somebody did.” Meanwhile, Schiff criticized Trump’s recent pardons of Jan. 6 rioters, calling them a “sick betrayal of the rule of law” and accusing the president of encouraging violence by signaling support for those who act on his behalf. “He doesn’t give a rat’s a– about law enforcement,” Schiff said, echoing widespread condemnation from law enforcement groups.

The wildfires, which have ravaged Los Angeles, have also become a political flashpoint. While Democrats push for emergency funding, Republicans, including Trump, have called for conditions on aid, with Trump falsely accusing California Democrats of prioritizing environmental protections over firefighting efforts. Schiff and other California lawmakers have urged Trump to support federal disaster relief without partisan strings attached.
