Sen. Murkowski Opposes Trump's Defense Nominee Over Character Concerns

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) announced on Thursday that she will not support Pete Hegseth, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, citing concerns about his character, judgment, and qualifications. Murkowski, known for occasionally breaking with her party, expressed reservations about Hegseth’s past behavior, including admitted infidelity, allegations of excessive drinking, and his previous comments opposing women in combat roles. She stated that these issues “demonstrate a lack of judgment that is unbecoming of someone who would lead our armed forces.”

Murkowski’s decision came after a thorough review of Hegseth’s writings, reports, and feedback from constituents, veterans, and organizations. She emphasized that managing the Department of Defense requires vast experience and expertise, which she believes Hegseth lacks. “After careful consideration, I must conclude that I cannot in good conscience support his nomination for Secretary of Defense,” Murkowski said in a statement.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) also announced her opposition to Hegseth, echoing Murkowski’s concerns about his qualifications and past statements on women in combat. Collins noted that while she appreciates Hegseth’s military service, she is not convinced he has the necessary experience or perspective to succeed in the role.

Hegseth, a former Fox News host and combat veteran, has faced allegations of sexual assault and financial mismanagement, which he has denied, calling them part of a “smear campaign.” Despite these controversies, Hegseth advanced through a procedural Senate vote on Thursday with a 51-49 margin, with Murkowski and Collins being the only Republicans to vote against him. A final confirmation vote is expected on Friday, where Hegseth will need a simple majority to secure the position. If the vote results in a tie, Vice President JD Vance would cast the deciding vote.

Murkowski and Collins’ opposition highlights the challenges Hegseth faces in gaining bipartisan support, as Democrats have uniformly criticized his nomination. The outcome of the confirmation vote will serve as a test of Trump’s influence over the Senate and the Republican Party’s willingness to back his controversial nominees.
