Severe Weather Alert; Snow and Ice Warning for Northern Ireland
The National Weather Service has issued a new weather warning for snow and ice across Northern Ireland, set to take effect at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 24, and remain in place until 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 25. This follows a red alert for wind due to Storm Eowyn, which caused widespread disruption, including power outages affecting over 93,000 homes and businesses. The snow and ice warning covers the entire region, with the National Weather Service cautioning that icy stretches and snow showers could lead to hazardous driving conditions. Snow accumulations are expected, particularly on high ground in the west, while untreated surfaces are likely to become icy as temperatures drop.
An amber wind warning is also in place until 9 p.m. on Friday, with a yellow wind warning extending until 11:59 p.m. A further yellow wind warning will be active across Northern Ireland on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel as the region braces for continued severe weather.
