Storm Éowyn Causes Widespread Power Outages in Northern Ireland

NIE Networks has reported significant damage to the electricity network across Northern Ireland due to Storm Éowyn, with approximately 283,000 customers left without power as of Friday, January 24, 2025. The storm, which brought hurricane-force winds and a red weather warning, caused widespread disruption, including fallen trees and damaged power lines. Restoration efforts are underway, but NIE has warned that it may take significant time to fully restore power, as crews cannot begin work until it is safe to do so.

Alex Houston, Network Operations Manager for NIE Networks, urged the public to stay clear of damaged electricity equipment and to report any incidents immediately. He emphasized that electricity can jump gaps, and even if damage is not immediately visible, fallen trees may have impacted power lines. NIE has prioritized addressing hazards and critical infrastructure sites, with restoration efforts expected to continue into Tuesday for some areas.

Community assistance centers have been set up in Craigavon, Coleraine, and other locations to provide support, including warm drinks, charging facilities, and advice for those without power. NIE has also encouraged vulnerable individuals to seek shelter with friends or relatives who have electricity until the situation is resolved.

The storm has been described as one of the worst in recent years, with sustained winds of 60-70 mph causing extensive damage. NIE Networks has deployed additional resources, including contractors and the Red Cross, to assist with the restoration efforts and provide welfare checks to affected residents. Customers are advised to report power outages via NIE’s helpline or online platforms.
