Storm Éowyn Ravages UK with Severe Weather Conditions
Storm Éowyn has brought severe weather conditions to the UK, with Northern Ireland and Scotland bearing the brunt of the storm. The Met Office issued a rare red weather warning for wind, indicating “danger to life” due to gusts reaching up to 100 mph in some coastal areas. The red warning, the highest alert level, was in place until 2 p.m. on Friday, with amber and yellow warnings continuing into the evening.
The storm caused widespread disruption, including the closure of all schools in Northern Ireland and the suspension of public transportation services. Thousands of homes were left without power, with NIE Networks warning that restoration efforts would take significant time due to unsafe working conditions. Emergency services were inundated with calls, with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service responding to over 160 incidents, including structural damage and fallen trees.
In Scotland, the storm brought winds exceeding 90 mph in some areas, leading to power outages and travel chaos. ScotRail canceled all services on Friday, and schools across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire were closed as a precaution. The Scottish government urged residents to avoid travel, citing the risk of structural damage, power disruptions, and dangerous outdoor conditions.
The storm also caused significant coastal flooding and damage to infrastructure, with reports of trees being uprooted and debris scattered across roads. The Met Office warned that the severe conditions were driven by a strong jet stream, influenced by cold air over North America, which intensified the storm’s impact.
As the storm moved northeast, conditions began to ease, but further warnings for snow and ice were issued for the weekend. Authorities advised the public to remain cautious and prepared for ongoing disruptions.
