Trump Orders Declassification of JFK, RFK, and MLK Assassination Records

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to declassify government records related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The move, long anticipated by historians and the public, aims to provide transparency into some of the most debated events in modern American history.

The order mandates the release of all remaining classified documents concerning the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy, as well as records related to the killings of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. Trump emphasized that the release of these documents is “long overdue” and in the public interest, stating, “Everything will be revealed.”

The JFK assassination files have been a subject of intense scrutiny and conspiracy theories for decades. While the Warren Commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in killing Kennedy, many Americans remain skeptical. Trump had previously released a trove of JFK-related documents in 2017 but withheld some records at the urging of the CIA and FBI, citing national security concerns. This new order overrides those redactions.

The release also extends to the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., which have similarly been shrouded in mystery and speculation. Robert F. Kennedy, a Democratic presidential candidate, was shot by Sirhan Sirhan in Los Angeles in 1968. Martin Luther King Jr., a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, was killed by James Earl Ray in Memphis the same year. Both cases have fueled theories of broader conspiracies, with some alleging government involvement.

The King family has expressed hope for the opportunity to review the files privately before their public release. Meanwhile, lawmakers and historians have welcomed the move, with Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) calling it a step toward transparency, stating, “Americans deserve to know the truth, whether it makes the government look good or not.”

The declassification process is expected to take up to 60 days, though Trump has urged agencies to act “without delay.” While experts caution that the documents may not reveal groundbreaking new information, their release could provide closure for the families of the victims and the American public.
