Trump Orders Full Declassification of JFK, RFK, and MLK Assassination Records
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 23, 2025, to declassify all remaining government records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The order, signed in the Oval Office, aims to provide transparency and address long-standing public interest and conspiracy theories surrounding the deaths of these prominent figures. Trump stated, “Everything will be revealed,” emphasizing that the release of these records is long overdue.
The declassification process will be overseen by the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General, who are required to present a plan within 15 days for the full release of JFK-related records and within 45 days for those concerning RFK and MLK. The move fulfills a campaign promise Trump made during his 2024 re-election bid, where he pledged to release all remaining classified documents related to the assassinations.
The JFK Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992 mandated the release of all records by October 2017, but previous administrations, including Trump’s first term and Joe Biden’s presidency, withheld some documents citing national security concerns. Trump’s order asserts that continued redaction is no longer in the public interest. While millions of pages related to JFK’s assassination have already been released, experts estimate that approximately 3,000 documents remain partially or fully classified, many of which originated from the CIA.
The release of these records has sparked mixed reactions. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary and the nephew of JFK, expressed gratitude, calling it a step toward government transparency. However, JFK’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg, criticized the move as using his grandfather’s legacy as a “political prop.”
The assassinations of JFK in 1963, RFK in 1968, and MLK in 1968 have been the subject of widespread conspiracy theories, with many questioning the official conclusions that lone gunmen were responsible. While experts do not anticipate groundbreaking revelations, the release of these records is expected to provide additional context and details about the investigations and the era in which these tragic events occurred.
