UK Braces for Snow and Ice Following Storm Eowyn

The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings for snow and ice across the UK, following the aftermath of Storm Eowyn. The warnings, which are in effect from Friday evening through Saturday morning, highlight hazardous conditions, particularly for travel.

In Northern Ireland, a yellow snow and ice warning is in place from 7 p.m. on Friday until 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Met Office has cautioned that icy stretches and snow showers will lead to dangerous driving conditions, with small accumulations of snow expected, particularly on high ground in the west. Ice is anticipated to be the primary hazard, forming on untreated surfaces as temperatures drop.

Similar warnings have been issued for Scotland, where snow showers are expected to continue overnight into Saturday morning. Accumulations of 5-10 cm are likely on higher ground, with icy stretches forming on untreated surfaces. The Met Office has advised that roads and railways may be affected, leading to longer travel times, and there is a risk of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

In England and Wales, a yellow ice warning is in effect from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, covering parts of the East Midlands, West Midlands, and southern England. The Met Office has warned of icy patches on untreated roads, sidewalks, and bike paths, which could result in hazardous conditions.

Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for potential disruptions. The warnings come as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing overnight, increasing the risk of ice formation.
