Walter Salles's 'I’m Still Here' Shines in Awards Season with Oscar Nominations

Walter Salles’s I’m Still Here has emerged as a powerful contender this awards season, earning critical acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, and a historic Best Actress nod for Fernanda Torres. The film, based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s memoir, tells the harrowing true story of Eunice Paiva, a mother of five who fights to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of her husband, Rubens Paiva, during Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s. Rubens, a left-wing congressman and engineer, was arrested by the regime and became one of the country’s “disappeared,” leaving Eunice to navigate a life of uncertainty and resistance.

Fernanda Torres delivers a standout performance as Eunice, capturing both her quiet strength and vulnerability. Her portrayal has earned widespread praise, culminating in a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Drama and an Oscar nomination, making her only the second Brazilian actress to receive such recognition after her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated in 1999. The film also features Montenegro in a poignant cameo as the elderly Eunice, adding a layer of generational significance to the project.

I’m Still Here premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Best Director award for Salles and the Best Screenplay prize for co-writers Daniela Thomas and João Moreira Salles. The film has been a box office success in Brazil, grossing over $13.2 million, and is now expanding its theatrical release in the U.S., with a nationwide rollout set for February 14, 2025. While it is currently available in select theaters, a streaming release is expected later, likely on Netflix due to Sony Pictures Classics’ distribution deal.

The film’s exploration of political repression, familial resilience, and personal sacrifice resonates deeply, offering a stark yet intimate portrait of Brazil’s darkest days. With its universal themes and Torres’s compelling performance, I’m Still Here has cemented its place as a significant cinematic achievement and a strong contender in this year’s awards race.
