Washington Woman Arrested in Fatal Shooting of Border Patrol Agent
A 21-year-old Washington state woman, Teresa Youngblut, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland during a traffic stop in Coventry, Vermont, on Monday, January 20, 2025. The incident occurred on Interstate 91, near the Canadian border, after Maland and other agents stopped a blue Toyota Prius driven by Youngblut. The passenger, Felix Baukholt, a German national with an expired visa, was also involved in the altercation.
According to court documents, Youngblut allegedly fired two shots at the agents during the stop without warning, prompting a return of fire from at least one Border Patrol agent. Baukholt attempted to draw a firearm but was shot and died at the scene. Maland sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Youngblut was injured in the exchange and remains hospitalized at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Investigators revealed that Youngblut and Baukholt had been under surveillance since January 14, after a hotel employee in Lyndonville reported seeing the pair dressed in tactical gear and carrying firearms. Authorities observed them purchasing aluminum foil at a Walmart in Newport hours before the shooting, where they were seen wrapping unidentified objects in the car. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered tactical gear, including a ballistic helmet, night-vision goggles, ammunition, two-way radios, and cellphones wrapped in foil.
Youngblut faces federal charges, including assault on a federal law enforcement officer and assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, she could face 10 years to life in prison. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the motive behind the shooting.
