Al Harris Joins Chicago Bears as Defensive Pass Game Coordinator
Al Harris, the former Dallas Cowboys defensive backs coach and assistant head coach, is set to join the Chicago Bears’ coaching staff as the defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach under new head coach Ben Johnson. This move marks a significant addition to the Bears’ staff as they continue to rebuild under Johnson’s leadership.
Harris, a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback during his playing career, spent the last five seasons with the Cowboys, where he played a key role in developing standout players like Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. His departure from Dallas comes amid a broader reshuffling of the Cowboys’ coaching staff following the departure of head coach Mike McCarthy.
The 50-year-old Harris brings a wealth of experience to Chicago, having previously coached with the Kansas City Chiefs and Florida Atlantic University before joining the Cowboys in 2020. His expertise in developing defensive backs will be crucial for the Bears, who boast young talent like Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, and Kyler Gordon in their secondary.
Harris’ hiring is part of a broader effort by the Bears to assemble a strong coaching staff under Johnson, who was recently hired after a successful stint as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator. The Bears are looking to improve their defensive performance and compete in a highly competitive NFC North division.
This move also reunites Harris with Johnson, as the two previously crossed paths during Harris’ time as an intern with the Miami Dolphins in 2012. The Bears are hopeful that Harris’ experience and coaching acumen will help elevate their defense in the 2025 season.
