Alysa Liu Triumphs at U.S. Figure Skating Championships with Emotional Comeback

Alysa Liu made a triumphant return to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, winning the women’s short program with a score of 76.36. The 19-year-old, who retired from the sport in 2022, delivered a heartfelt performance to Laufey’s “Promise,” showcasing a newfound maturity and emotional depth that brought the audience to its feet. Liu’s program included a triple flip-triple toe loop combination, a double Axel, and a triple Lutz, earning her a significant lead over two-time U.S. champion Bradie Tennell (71.23) and defending champion Amber Glenn (70.91).

Liu, who became the youngest U.S. champion at age 13 in 2019, stepped away from skating after winning bronze at the 2022 World Championships. She cited burnout and a desire to explore life beyond the rink, including attending UCLA and trekking to Mount Everest base camp. Her return to competition this season has been marked by steady improvement, with strong performances at Challenger Series events and Grand Prix competitions.

In her short program, Liu’s emotional connection to the ice was palpable. She teared up after her performance, reflecting on her journey back to the sport. “I was emotional from the very beginning to the end,” Liu said. “I felt very connected to the ice.”

Glenn, who entered the competition as the favorite after an undefeated season, struggled with her triple Axel and under-rotated a triple-triple combination, leaving her in third place. Tennell, returning from a series of injuries, delivered a solid performance to secure second place.

The U.S. Championships serve as a key selection event for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, and Liu’s strong showing positions her as a contender for the U.S. team. The competition continues with the women’s free skate on Friday, where Liu will aim to secure her third national title.
