Brian Schottenheimer Named Dallas Cowboys' New Head Coach

The Dallas Cowboys have named Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, marking the 10th head coach in franchise history. Schottenheimer, who previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator, was promoted after a relatively short coaching search. The 51-year-old son of legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, Brian has been with the Cowboys since 2022, initially as a consultant before taking over as offensive coordinator in 2023.

Schottenheimer’s hiring comes after the Cowboys parted ways with Mike McCarthy following a disappointing 7-10 season in 2024. Despite not calling plays during his tenure as offensive coordinator, Schottenheimer was credited with helping the Cowboys lead the league in scoring in 2023, though the offense struggled in 2024 due to injuries, including a season-ending hamstring injury to quarterback Dak Prescott.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed confidence in Schottenheimer, stating, “Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant. He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.” Schottenheimer signed a four-year deal and will now be tasked with ending the Cowboys’ 29-year Super Bowl drought, the longest in the NFC.

Schottenheimer’s coaching career spans over two decades, including stints as an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and Cowboys. His father, Marty Schottenheimer, was a highly successful NFL coach, amassing 200 regular-season wins and leading teams to the playoffs 18 times in 21 seasons.

The Cowboys also reportedly have their sights set on former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as their next defensive coordinator. Eberflus, who previously worked with the Cowboys from 2011 to 2017, is expected to bring stability to a defense that struggled at times in 2024.

Schottenheimer’s promotion has drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning whether he can elevate the Cowboys beyond their recent playoff struggles. However, his familiarity with the organization and players, particularly Prescott, could provide continuity as the team looks to rebound in 2025.
