Dallas Cowboys Appoint Brian Schottenheimer as New Head Coach
The Dallas Cowboys have hired Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach, marking the 10th full-time head coach in franchise history. Schottenheimer, who has served as the team’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, will take over from Mike McCarthy after the Cowboys opted for an in-house hire. The 51-year-old coach, son of the late NFL coaching legend Marty Schottenheimer, has no prior head coaching experience in the NFL but brings over 25 years of coaching experience, including 14 as an offensive coordinator.
Schottenheimer’s hiring comes after a disappointing 7-10 season for the Cowboys, who struggled offensively in 2024, finishing 21st in scoring. Despite the team’s struggles, Schottenheimer’s familiarity with the organization and quarterback Dak Prescott played a significant role in his promotion. Prescott had one of his best seasons under Schottenheimer in 2023, leading the league in scoring offense, but injuries and inconsistency plagued the team in 2024.
The Cowboys interviewed several candidates, including former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. However, Schottenheimer emerged as the top choice due to his existing relationships within the organization and his ability to maintain continuity.
Schottenheimer’s coaching career began in 1997 as an assistant with the St. Louis Rams, and he has since worked with multiple NFL teams, including the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, and Jacksonville Jaguars. His father, Marty Schottenheimer, was a highly respected NFL coach with 200 regular-season wins, though Brian has yet to prove himself as a head coach.
The Cowboys’ decision to promote Schottenheimer has drawn comparisons to previous in-house hires, such as Dave Campo and Jason Garrett, both of whom had mixed results. While Schottenheimer’s hiring may not be the splashy move some fans hoped for, the Cowboys are banking on his familiarity with the team and his ability to stabilize the offense as they aim to end a 29-year Super Bowl drought.
