Dallas Cowboys Consider Matt Eberflus for Defensive Coordinator Role
The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly eyeing former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as their next defensive coordinator under newly hired head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Eberflus, who previously served as the Cowboys’ linebackers coach from 2011 to 2017, is considered a “prime candidate” for the role, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Eberflus, 53, was fired by the Bears in November 2024 after compiling a 14-32 record over two-plus seasons. His tenure in Chicago was marked by struggles, including a disastrous Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions that ultimately led to his dismissal. Despite his challenges as a head coach, Eberflus has a strong track record as a defensive coordinator, particularly during his time with the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021, where he engineered two playoff-bound defenses.
During his initial stint with the Cowboys, Eberflus was instrumental in developing standout linebackers such as Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith, both of whom became Pro Bowl honorees. If hired, Eberflus would be tasked with revitalizing a Cowboys defense that struggled in 2024, allowing the second-most points and the fifth-most yards in the league.
The Cowboys’ decision to promote Schottenheimer, who served as the team’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, has raised eyebrows. Schottenheimer, the son of legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, has never been a head coach before and inherits a team with high expectations. The Cowboys have not reached an NFC Championship Game in 30 years, the longest such drought in the conference.
Eberflus’ potential hiring would mark a reunion with the Cowboys, where he previously worked under then-head coach Jason Garrett. His familiarity with the organization and his defensive expertise could provide a much-needed boost to a unit that underperformed last season. However, the Cowboys must first comply with the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for coordinator positions before making a final decision.
As the Cowboys look to rebuild under Schottenheimer, the addition of Eberflus as defensive coordinator could be a key step in addressing the team’s defensive woes and returning to playoff contention.
