Matt Eberflus Emerges as Top Candidate for Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Role
Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is reportedly a leading candidate to become the next defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple sources. Eberflus, who was fired by the Bears in November 2024 after a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day, has a history with the Cowboys organization. He served as a defensive assistant under Rod Marinelli from 2011 to 2017, primarily working as the linebackers coach and later adding the title of passing game coordinator.
Eberflus, 54, has extensive NFL coaching experience, including a four-year stint as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021, where his defenses consistently ranked among the league’s best in key categories. His tenure with the Bears, however, was less successful, as he posted a 14-32 record over two-plus seasons and struggled with game management issues, particularly in late-game situations.
The Cowboys are in the process of assembling a new coaching staff under recently hired head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Eberflus is seen as a strong fit for the defensive coordinator role, given his familiarity with the organization and his track record of developing defensive talent. If hired, he would replace Mike Zimmer, who spent one season as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator.
The Cowboys’ defense struggled in the 2024 season, ranking 28th in total defense and last in red zone defense. Eberflus would inherit a unit that includes standout players like Micah Parsons, providing an opportunity to rebuild the defense into a competitive force. The hiring process is ongoing, and the Cowboys are required to interview at least two minority candidates for the position under the NFL’s Rooney Rule.
