Pelicans' Winning Streak Snapped by Grizzlies in High-Scoring Affair
The New Orleans Pelicans’ four-game winning streak came to an end Friday night as they fell 139-126 to the Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum. Despite a strong first half, the Pelicans couldn’t maintain their momentum, allowing the Grizzlies to dominate the second half and secure their fifth consecutive win.
The Pelicans (12-33) started strong, finishing the first half on a 15-2 run to take a 71-62 lead. Dejounte Murray led the charge with 17 first-half points, while CJ McCollum and Jordan Hawkins each added 15. However, the Grizzlies (30-15), the NBA’s highest-scoring team, responded with a 43-29 third-quarter surge, outscoring the Pelicans 77-55 in the second half. Memphis’ offensive firepower proved too much for New Orleans, as they shot 56% from the field and hit 14 three-pointers.
Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 29 points, including 15 in the third quarter, while Desmond Bane contributed 20 points and 14 assists. Luke Kennard added 27 points off the bench, making 7 of 9 three-point attempts. For the Pelicans, Murray finished with 26 points, seven assists, and six rebounds, while McCollum and Trey Murphy each scored 22 points. Hawkins added 20 points, but the Pelicans’ defense struggled to contain Memphis’ balanced attack.
Both teams were missing key players. Pelicans star Zion Williamson was ruled out for “return to play reconditioning” after missing Monday’s game with an illness, while Grizzlies guard Ja Morant was sidelined due to illness. Williamson has missed all three matchups against the Grizzlies this season, and the Pelicans have lost each game by double digits.
The Pelicans will look to bounce back Saturday night in Charlotte against the Hornets, while the Grizzlies host the Utah Jazz. New Orleans will hope to have Williamson back in the lineup as they aim to start a new winning streak.
