Rutgers Men's Basketball Faces Season Challenge with Ogbole's Injury
Rutgers men’s basketball has suffered a significant setback as junior center Emmanuel Ogbole will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to a knee injury sustained during the team’s recent loss to Penn State. Ogbole, who started 15 of the team’s first 19 games, averaged 3.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks per game in 14.8 minutes of play. His absence leaves a void in the Scarlet Knights’ frontcourt, particularly in rebounding and interior defense.
The injury comes at a challenging time for Rutgers, which is currently 10-9 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play. Ogbole’s departure places additional pressure on freshman center Lathan Somerville, who has started the last four games but has shown inconsistency, committing 14 fouls and averaging 5.5 points and 4.5 rebounds during that stretch. The team may also rely on graduate student Clifford Omoruyi and freshman forwards Bryce Dortch and Dylan Grant to fill the gap in the paint.
Rutgers faces a tough test in its next game against No. 8 Michigan State at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, January 25. The Spartans, led by guard Tyson Walker (13.9 points per game), enter the matchup with a 16-2 record and an 11-game winning streak. Michigan State is favored by 5.5 points, with the over/under set at 148.5 points. Rutgers will lean heavily on its star freshman duo, Ace Bailey (19.9 points, 7.9 rebounds per game) and Dylan Harper (19.3 points, 4.3 assists per game), to compete against the conference leaders.
The loss of Ogbole further complicates Rutgers’ postseason aspirations. While the team remains in contention for the NIT, making the NCAA Tournament would require a strong finish to the regular season or a deep run in the Big Ten Tournament. The Scarlet Knights’ next game against Michigan State will be a critical opportunity to gauge their ability to overcome adversity and remain competitive in a challenging conference.
