São Paulo Hit by Intense Storm, Causing Flooding and Power Outages
The city of São Paulo faced an intense storm on the afternoon of this Friday (24), which caused flooding, power outages, and disruptions in public transportation. The Civil Defense issued a severe alert via SMS to residents, advising them to stay in safe locations due to the risk of flooding and strong wind gusts. The alert was sent to all mobile phones with 4G or 5G coverage in the affected area.
The storm, which lasted about two hours, brought a volume of rain that exceeded the accumulated rainfall of 23 days in some areas. In the northern zone, the Mirante de Santana recorded 122 millimeters of rain between 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM. The region was one of the most affected, with part of the roof of the Shopping Center Norte collapsing, though there were no casualties. Additionally, a residence in Santana and the roof of a commercial building in Vila Maria also collapsed, but no injuries were reported.
The public transportation system was heavily impacted. The Blue Line of the Metro had flooded stations, such as Jardim São Paulo, where water invaded the boarding area, creating strong currents. The section between Tucuruvi and Jardim São Paulo stations was interrupted, and train circulation was maintained only between Jabaquara and Santana. CPTM also reported problems on the Ruby, Turquoise, Coral, and Sapphire lines, with interruptions and reduced speed in some sections.
In the western zone, Beco do Batman, a tourist spot in Vila Madalena, was completely flooded. The Pompeia region, where the Sesc-Pompeia station of the Orange Line of the Metro is under construction, was also invaded by water, but the concessionaire responsible stated that the construction work would not be affected.
Enel reported that, at the peak of the storm, more than 179,000 properties were without electricity in Greater São Paulo, with 140,000 in the capital. By 9:30 PM, the number of customers without power had dropped to 116,000 in the metropolitan area and 94,000 in the capital.
The Civil Defense emphasized that the severe alert was issued after confirming that the rain had significant potential for damage, with 80 millimeters of precipitation in just one hour. The forecast for the coming days is unstable weather, with the possibility of more storms, especially on Sunday (26), with the arrival of a cold front on the São Paulo coast.
Despite the damage, the São Paulo City Hall reported that no events celebrating the city’s anniversary, which turns 471 years old this Saturday (25), were canceled or altered due to the storm.
