UCLA's Aday Mara Shines in Breakout Performance Against Wisconsin

UCLA’s 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara delivered a career-high 22 points in a breakout performance during the Bruins’ 85-83 victory over No. 18 Wisconsin on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion. The win snapped Wisconsin’s seven-game winning streak and marked UCLA’s third victory over a ranked opponent this season. Mara, who made all seven of his field goal attempts and eight of 12 free throws, also contributed five rebounds and two blocks in a season-high 21 minutes. His dominant play, combined with 19 points from guard Sebastian Mack, helped the Bruins overcome a strong offensive showing from Wisconsin, which shot over 50% from the field and three-point range.

Head coach Mick Cronin praised Mara’s readiness and impact, noting that the sophomore’s performance was a result of his consistent effort in practice. Cronin also highlighted the contributions of other players, including Mack, who scored 15 critical points in the second half, and William Kyle III, whose late-game block secured the win. Despite the victory, Cronin emphasized that Mara’s role will remain situational, with his playing time adjusted based on matchups.

The Bruins, now 13-6 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten, will look to build on this momentum as they face Washington on Friday night. The Huskies, who have lost five straight games, are struggling with a 1-7 conference record but could pose a challenge on their home court. UCLA defeated Washington 69-58 in their first meeting this season, but the Huskies covered the spread as 12-point underdogs. With Mara’s emergence and the team’s recent resurgence, the Bruins aim to continue their climb in the conference standings.

Big size? Yes. Bigger role? That remains to be seen for UCLA's 7-foot-3 Aday Mara
