United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Return to Lagos Due to Technical Issue
A United Airlines flight bound for Washington, D.C., was forced to make an emergency return to Lagos, Nigeria, after experiencing a technical issue mid-flight, leaving six people injured. The incident occurred on Friday, January 24, 2025, aboard Flight UA613, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots.
According to United Airlines, the aircraft encountered an “unexpected movement” during the flight, prompting the decision to return to Lagos. Four passengers and two flight attendants sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital for evaluation. All injured individuals have since been released.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed that the aircraft landed safely at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, where emergency services were on standby. Passengers recounted chaotic scenes inside the plane, with food, drinks, and personal belongings scattered across the cabin due to the sudden movements. One passenger described hitting their head on the ceiling during the turbulence, which occurred multiple times during the flight.
United Airlines stated that it is working with aviation authorities in both the U.S. and Nigeria to investigate the cause of the incident. The airline ruled out severe turbulence as the cause of the unexpected movement, but no further details have been provided.
The incident has raised concerns about aviation safety, particularly as the same aircraft had experienced a diversion earlier in the week on the same route, though the reason for that diversion remains unclear. Authorities are examining the flight data recorder to determine the exact cause of the technical issue.
