Washington Woman Charged in Fatal Shooting of Border Patrol Agent
A 21-year-old Washington state woman, Teresa Youngblut, has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland during a traffic stop in Coventry, Vermont, on Monday, January 20, 2025. The incident occurred on Interstate 91, approximately 20 miles from the Canadian border, and also resulted in the death of Felix Baukholt, a German national who was traveling with Youngblut.
According to court documents, Maland and other agents stopped a blue Toyota Prius driven by Youngblut for an immigration inspection after Baukholt, the passenger, appeared to have an expired visa. During the stop, Youngblut allegedly fired a handgun without warning at the agents, prompting an exchange of gunfire. Baukholt attempted to draw a firearm but was shot and died at the scene. Maland was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Youngblut was wounded and remains hospitalized.
Investigators had been surveilling Youngblut and Baukholt since January 14 after a hotel employee in Lyndonville, Vermont, reported concerns about the pair wearing all-black tactical gear and carrying firearms. Authorities observed them purchasing aluminum foil at a Walmart in Newport, Vermont, hours before the shooting, and wrapping unidentified objects in the vehicle. A search of the Prius revealed an arsenal of weapons, tactical gear, night-vision equipment, ammunition, and electronic devices, some wrapped in foil.
Youngblut faces federal charges, including assault on a federal law enforcement officer and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. If convicted, she could face 10 years to life in prison. The FBI emphasized its commitment to holding accountable those who assault law enforcement officers, calling Maland a “shining example of service over self.”
Maland, a 44-year-old Air Force veteran from Minnesota, had served at the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks and was a K-9 handler at the U.S.-Mexico border before transferring to the northern border. His family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and asked for continued prayers as they grieve his loss.
