Auburn Basketball; Howard Dismissed, Broome Shines in Narrow Victory Over Tennessee
Freshman Jahki Howard was dismissed from the Auburn basketball bench during the second half of the Tigers’ 53-51 victory over Tennessee on January 25, 2025. Howard, who played only five minutes and recorded one assist, exited the game after head coach Bruce Pearl expressed dissatisfaction with his defensive effort, particularly on a failed closeout that led to a Tennessee three-pointer. Assistant coaches Corey Williams and Bryant Smith followed Howard to the locker room, but he did not return to the court. Pearl later stated that Howard was unhappy with his rotation and that the two had a postgame conversation, adding, “He’ll be fine.” Howard’s future with the team remains uncertain due to prior disciplinary issues earlier in the season.
Meanwhile, Auburn’s star forward Johni Broome returned to the lineup despite a significant ankle sprain suffered two weeks prior. Broome played 33 minutes, contributing 16 points and 13 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, in a gritty performance. His leadership and resilience were pivotal in the Tigers’ narrow victory, as he helped secure crucial defensive rebounds in the final moments. Broome’s return was a key factor in Auburn extending its winning streak to 11 games and maintaining its No. 1 ranking.
The game itself was a defensive battle, with both teams shooting under 32% from the field. Miles Kelly hit the game-winning three-pointer with 30 seconds left, assisted by Broome, to give Auburn the lead. Tennessee had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Zakai Zeigler’s three-point attempt missed, sealing the victory for the Tigers. Auburn’s next game is against LSU on January 29, while Tennessee will host Kentucky on January 28.
