Duke Blue Devils Extend Winning Streak with Victory Over Wake Forest
The No. 2-ranked Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team (16-2, 8-0 ACC) extended their winning streak to 12 games with a hard-fought 63-56 victory over Wake Forest (15-4, 7-1 ACC) on Saturday at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The game, broadcast on ESPN, showcased Duke’s defensive prowess and resilience in a hostile road environment.
Duke’s defense, ranked second nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, held Wake Forest to just 56 points, well below their season average. Freshman phenom Cooper Flagg led the Blue Devils with a dominant performance, contributing 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks. His defensive presence, combined with the efforts of Khaman Maluach and Kon Knueppel, stifled Wake Forest’s offense, particularly in the second half.
Wake Forest, riding a six-game winning streak, struggled to find consistency on offense. Senior guard Hunter Sallis, averaging 19.2 points per game, was limited to 14 points on 7-of-19 shooting. The Demon Deacons, who entered the game with a perfect 10-0 home record, were unable to overcome Duke’s length and athleticism, shooting just 28.1% from beyond the arc.
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer praised his team’s ability to adapt, noting the switch to a zone defense in the second half as a key adjustment. “Our guys showed tremendous poise and toughness,” Scheyer said. “Wake Forest is a great team, especially at home, and our defense stepped up when we needed it most.”
The Blue Devils now turn their attention to a home matchup against NC State on Monday, followed by a highly anticipated showdown with archrival North Carolina on February 1, which will feature ESPN’s College GameDay. Meanwhile, Wake Forest looks to regroup as they continue their push for an NCAA Tournament bid.
