Lin-Manuel Miranda Surprises on SNL with Hamilton Cameo
Lin-Manuel Miranda made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live during the January 25, 2025 episode, reprising his iconic role as Alexander Hamilton from the Broadway musical Hamilton. The cold open sketch featured Miranda alongside the show’s cast, portraying the Founding Fathers signing the Declaration of Independence. Miranda’s Hamilton delivered a signature rap, declaring, “In America, all men are created equal. America, not England, we’re doing the sequel. And we will have leaders, but know one thing: In America, we will never have a king.”
The moment was interrupted by James Austin Johnson’s portrayal of President Donald Trump, who quipped, “Never say never,” before launching into a comedic monologue about his “king era.” Johnson’s Trump humorously recapped his first week in office, referencing executive orders and poking fun at political and cultural issues. At one point, he teased Miranda, who remained frozen in character, saying, “Look at Lin. He got tricked into coming here, and now he’s frozen on stage.” Miranda briefly broke character, smiling as Johnson continued to jest about his proximity to achieving an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony).
The episode, hosted by Timothée Chalamet, also featured musical performances by Chalamet, who sang Bob Dylan songs in line with his role in the biopic Complete Unknown. Adam Sandler made a cameo to introduce Chalamet’s first musical segment, adding to the star-studded night. Miranda’s appearance was a highlight, blending his Broadway roots with SNL’s signature political satire.
