NFL Fines Washington Commanders' Frankie Luvu for Safety Violations in Playoff Game
Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu has been fined a total of $33,766 by the NFL for two separate incidents during the team’s Divisional Round playoff victory over the Detroit Lions. The fines stem from a helmet-to-helmet hit on Lions quarterback Jared Goff and an illegal hip-drop tackle on running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
The first fine, amounting to $16,883, was levied for a roughing-the-passer penalty after Luvu delivered a blow to Goff’s head/neck area during an interception return for a touchdown by Commanders safety Quan Martin. The hit, which occurred as Goff attempted to stop Martin from reaching the end zone, was not flagged during the game but was later deemed a violation by the league. Goff was forced to leave the game temporarily for a concussion evaluation but later returned.
The second fine, also $16,883, was issued for an illegal hip-drop tackle on Gibbs during the Lions’ subsequent offensive series. The tackle, which was not penalized during the game, was flagged by the NFL as a violation of its rules on player safety.
The Commanders’ 45-31 upset victory over the Lions, who were the No. 1 seed in the NFC, was marked by several pivotal plays, including Goff’s three interceptions. The win advanced Washington to the NFC Championship Game, where they will face the Philadelphia Eagles. Luvu’s fines highlight the league’s ongoing emphasis on player safety, particularly regarding hits to the head and dangerous tackling techniques.
