Rabid Black Bear Attacks Man in Pennsylvania, Highlighting Wildlife Risks
A black bear that attacked a man in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, January 21, 2025, has tested positive for rabies, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The incident occurred near River Street, a dead-end road in the Carbon County borough, as the victim was walking on a trail close to a supermarket and liquor store. Surveillance footage captured the bear rearing on its hind legs and attacking the man before a neighbor intervened, fatally shooting the animal.
The victim, identified as Andrew Nierer, was bitten in the arm during the encounter. Nierer, who was reportedly preparing for an Eagles game at the time, is already undergoing rabies treatment. The Pennsylvania Game Commission emphasized that the bear’s aggressive behavior was abnormal, as black bears are typically not aggressive toward humans. Rabies in bears is rare, but the disease poses a risk to all mammals. Officials urged the public to report any wildlife acting unusually by calling 833-PGC-WILD.
The attack highlights the importance of caution when encountering wildlife, especially in areas where human activity intersects with natural habitats. The incident has drawn significant attention, with local media sharing video footage of the encounter and updates on the victim’s condition. Authorities confirmed that no citations will be issued for the shooting of the bear, as it was actively attacking at the time.
