Chicago Bears Announce New Coaching Staff Under Ben Johnson
The Chicago Bears have made significant moves to fill out their coaching staff under new head coach Ben Johnson. The team has hired Declan Doyle as their offensive coordinator and Dennis Allen as their defensive coordinator, while retaining Richard Hightower as special teams coordinator, according to multiple reports.
Doyle, 28, becomes the youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL. He previously served as the tight ends coach for the Denver Broncos under Sean Payton for the past two seasons. Before that, Doyle spent four years as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints, where he worked alongside Allen and current Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell. Doyle’s primary role will be to assist Johnson in game planning and offensive strategy, though Johnson will retain play-calling duties. The Bears are banking on Doyle’s potential and his experience under Payton to help develop quarterback Caleb Williams and improve an offense that struggled last season, particularly along the offensive line.
Allen, 52, brings a wealth of experience to the Bears’ defense. He most recently served as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, where he was fired midway through the 2024 season after a 2-7 start. Prior to his head coaching stint, Allen was the Saints’ defensive coordinator from 2015 to 2021, during which the team consistently ranked among the league’s top defenses. Allen’s defensive schemes emphasize versatility in the secondary and strong run defense, areas where the Bears need improvement after finishing 27th in total defense and 28th against the run in 2024.
Hightower, who has been with the Bears since 2022, will continue to oversee special teams after the unit showed steady improvement last season, finishing fifth in defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA).
The Bears’ coaching staff is now taking shape as Johnson looks to rebuild the team into a contender. With Doyle and Allen in place, the focus will shift to addressing roster needs, particularly on the offensive and defensive lines, as the Bears aim to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
