Chiefs Triumph Over Bills in Thrilling AFC Championship, Eye Historic Three-Peat
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in a thrilling AFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The victory secured the Chiefs’ third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, where they will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on February 9 in New Orleans. The Chiefs are now one win away from becoming the first team in NFL history to achieve a three-peat in the Super Bowl era.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading leads multiple times. The Chiefs struck first with a 12-yard touchdown run by Kareem Hunt, but the Bills responded with a 53-yard field goal by Tyler Bass and a 6-yard touchdown run by James Cook to take a 10-7 lead. Kansas City regained the lead with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to rookie Xavier Worthy and a 1-yard touchdown run by Mahomes, making it 21-10. The Bills cut the deficit to 21-16 before halftime with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Josh Allen to Mack Hollins.
In the second half, the Bills took a 22-21 lead after Cook’s second touchdown run, but the Chiefs responded with a 10-yard touchdown run by Mahomes and a successful two-point conversion to go up 29-22. The Bills tied the game at 29-29 with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Curtis Samuel. However, the Chiefs sealed the win with a 35-yard field goal by Harrison Butker and a crucial defensive stop on fourth down with just over two minutes remaining.
Mahomes finished the game with 245 passing yards, one touchdown, and two rushing touchdowns, while Allen threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns. The Chiefs’ defense, led by Steve Spagnuolo, made key stops when it mattered most, including a blitz on fourth down that forced an incompletion to tight end Dalton Kincaid.
The Bills, who have now lost four consecutive playoff games to the Chiefs, will head into the offseason with questions about how to overcome their postseason struggles against Kansas City. Meanwhile, the Chiefs will look to make history in New Orleans as they aim for their third straight Super Bowl title.
