3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles New England Coast

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 struck off the coast of York Harbor, Maine, at 10:22 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025, rattling parts of New England, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The quake, initially reported as a 4.1 magnitude before being revised, was centered about six miles offshore and occurred at a depth of more than eight miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). No tsunami threat was reported, and there were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.

Residents across the region described the quake as a brief but intense shaking, lasting between five to ten seconds. In Massachusetts, the tremor was felt in areas such as Boston, Methuen, and Lunenburg, with some residents reporting rattling doors, swinging lights, and vibrations underfoot. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency confirmed reports of shaking but noted no damage. Similarly, the Maine Emergency Management Agency urged residents to check their homes for any potential damage but advised against calling 911 unless it was an emergency.

John Ebel, a senior scientist at the Weston Observatory at Boston College, described the quake as “significant” for the region, noting that earthquakes of this magnitude occur roughly once every five years in New England. He also mentioned the possibility of aftershocks, particularly in the North Shore area of Massachusetts, coastal New Hampshire, and southern Maine. The USGS estimated a 15% chance of at least one aftershock of magnitude 3 or higher within the next week.

The event serves as a reminder that while earthquakes are relatively rare in the Northeast, they are not unheard of. The region’s last significant quake occurred in April 2024, when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Lebanon, New Jersey. Monday’s quake was the strongest in the northeastern U.S. since that event.
