Indiana Man Pardoned for Capitol Riot Involvement Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop
Matthew Huttle, a 42-year-old Indiana man recently pardoned for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on Sunday, January 27, 2025. The incident occurred in Jasper County, Indiana, at approximately 4:15 p.m. Authorities reported that Huttle resisted arrest and was found to be carrying a firearm, leading to an altercation with the deputy. The deputy fired his weapon, resulting in Huttle’s death.
Huttle had pleaded guilty in August 2023 to entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds during the Capitol riot and was sentenced to six months in federal prison, followed by 12 months of supervised release. His sentence was rendered moot when former President Donald Trump pardoned him and approximately 1,500 others involved in the January 6 insurrection during his second term inauguration last week. Huttle’s uncle, Dale Huttle, who also participated in the riot, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for assaulting an officer with a flagpole.
Sheriff Patrick Williamson of Jasper County requested an investigation by the Indiana State Police into the shooting. The deputy involved was placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy. Williamson expressed condolences to Huttle’s family, acknowledging the traumatic nature of the loss.
Huttle’s involvement in the Capitol riot was documented through videos uploaded to his Google account, which showed him inside the Capitol building, including the crypt. His case was part of a broader wave of pardons that have sparked debate about accountability and the potential for further violence among those involved in the January 6 events.
