Selena Gomez's Emotional Response to Trump's Immigration Policies Sparks Debate
Selena Gomez sparked widespread reactions after posting a now-deleted video on her Instagram Story, where she tearfully expressed her distress over President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. In the emotional clip, Gomez, who is of Mexican-American descent, said, “All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” She accompanied her message with the Mexican flag emoji and the words “I’m sorry.”
The video drew mixed responses online, with some supporting her empathy and others criticizing her stance. Singer Lana Del Rey, a known supporter of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, commented, “You should pack your bags and go back to Mexico. Take your abuela (grandmother) with you.” Gomez later posted another Instagram Story, stating, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” which was also deleted shortly after.
Gomez has long been vocal about immigration issues. In 2019, she produced the Netflix docuseries Living Undocumented, which highlighted the struggles of undocumented families in the U.S. She has also shared her family’s immigration story, noting that her aunt crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in the 1970s, followed by her grandparents, leading to her father being born in Texas and her eventual U.S. citizenship. Gomez has described immigration as “an issue I think about every day.”
The controversy comes amid Trump’s recent executive actions, including deploying troops to the border and declaring criminal cartels as “global terrorist groups.” These measures have intensified debates over immigration enforcement, with Gomez’s emotional response reflecting the personal toll such policies can take on individuals and communities.
