At least three wildfires ignited on Wednesday near North Carolina towns that were devastated by Hurricane Helene, with the largest fire consuming 220 acres near Marion and forcing evacuations. The Crooked Creek Fire, caused by a downed power line during high winds, has burned an estimated 220 acres and is now 55% contained. Emergency crews made significant progress overnight as winds diminished and humidity increased, leading to lower fire activity. Evacuation orders have been lifted, allowing residents to return home, though emergency personnel remain onsite to monitor the situation. No injuries or fatalities have been reported, but one structure sustained damage, and multiple outbuildings were destroyed.
The North Carolina Forest Service had warned residents of ideal fire weather conditions due to low humidity and gusty winds, which create a perfect environment for rapid fire spread. The region is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which caused widespread devastation in late September, damaging or destroying over 70,000 homes and cutting off many communities from first responders. The storm was the costliest and deadliest of the season, with more than 200 lives lost. Debris from Helene, including dry brush and cut-down trees, has made firefighting efforts particularly challenging. Two additional fires began north of Marion on Wednesday afternoon, though no evacuations were required for those incidents.
