Severe Storm Triggers Flash Flood Warnings in North Texas

A powerful cross-country storm has triggered flash flood warnings across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and surrounding areas in North Texas, as torrential rain and severe weather sweep through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the warnings early Thursday morning, January 30, 2025, with significant rainfall already causing hazardous conditions.

Areas such as Dallas, Arlington, and Plano have been particularly affected, with reports of strong winds up to 55 mph and pea-sized hail in some locations. Grand Prairie recorded 4.45 inches of rain by 5:00 a.m. local time, while Mesquite Airport and Farmers Branch reported 4.32 inches and 3.98 inches, respectively. The heavy rainfall has led to flash flooding, disrupting morning commutes and raising concerns about further flooding in low-lying areas.

The storm system, which originated in the south-central U.S., is expected to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms across the Southern Plains and Mississippi Valley. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico is intensifying the severe weather, with the potential for damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes. The NWS has also warned of possible flash flooding extending into the Lower Ohio Valley.

As the storm moves east and northeast, it will weaken but continue to impact the central and eastern Gulf Coast with strong storms on Friday. Meanwhile, cold air behind the system is expected to bring wintry weather to New Mexico and Colorado, with heavy snowfall in higher elevations.

Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise caution, avoid flooded roadways, and stay updated on weather alerts as the storm progresses. The severe weather is expected to create challenging travel conditions across much of the south-central U.S. through the weekend.
