Martinez Refinery Fire Prompts Shelter-in-Place Order, Injures Six
A shelter-in-place order for residents near the Martinez Refining Company in Martinez, California, was lifted Saturday night after a fire broke out at the refinery, injuring at least six people. The fire, which began around 1:40 p.m., prompted a Level 3 alert—the most severe in Contra Costa County’s warning system—due to large plumes of black smoke spreading across the area. Residents in parts of Martinez and Pacheco were advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and turn off ventilation systems to avoid exposure to potentially toxic smoke.
Six individuals sustained minor injuries, with two treated on-site and four transported to local hospitals. One person remained hospitalized for observation as of Saturday night. Firefighters, aided by neighboring refineries such as Valero, Phillips 66, and Chevron, worked to contain the blaze using infrared and acoustic technology to locate and shut off leaking valves. By 9 p.m., the fire was significantly reduced, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted.
Contra Costa County health officials continued to monitor air quality overnight and issued a public health advisory for individuals with respiratory sensitivities. The cause of the fire, which involved a hydrocarbon leak, remains under investigation. The Martinez Refining Company, one of the largest employers in Contra Costa County, manufactures gas, diesel, and jet fuel. In October, the company agreed to pay $4.5 million to settle allegations of Clean Water Act violations linked to the refinery.
Community members expressed concerns about the potential environmental impact of the fire, particularly on nearby water sources. County officials and the refinery are working to determine the root cause of the incident and ensure public safety.
