Aga Khan IV, Spiritual Leader and Philanthropist, Passes Away at 88
The Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili Muslim community and a prominent philanthropist, passed away at the age of 88 in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family. His death was announced by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), which highlighted his lifelong dedication to improving the quality of life for millions worldwide through initiatives in healthcare, education, and rural development. Born Prince Karim Al-Hussaini on December 13, 1936, in Switzerland, he became the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims at the age of 20, succeeding his grandfather, Aga Khan III.
The Aga Khan was widely regarded as a bridge-builder between Muslim societies and the West, advocating for pluralism and tolerance. His philanthropic efforts spanned over 30 countries, with the AKDN operating hospitals, schools, and cultural restoration projects, including the restoration of Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi. He was also a patron of Islamic architecture, establishing programs at Harvard University and MIT. His personal wealth, estimated in the billions, was largely derived from tithes paid by Ismaili followers, who consider him a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.
Beyond his spiritual and philanthropic roles, the Aga Khan was a prominent figure in the equestrian world. He bred and owned racehorses, including the legendary Shergar, who won the Epsom Derby in 1981 by a record 10 lengths. Shergar’s kidnapping in 1983, which remains unsolved, was a significant personal loss. Despite this, the Aga Khan continued his involvement in horse racing, winning the Epsom Derby four more times.
Tributes poured in from global leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who called him a “symbol of peace, tolerance, and compassion.” His successor, the 50th Imam, will be named in accordance with his will. The Aga Khan is survived by three sons, a daughter, and several grandchildren. His legacy as a spiritual leader, philanthropist, and advocate for global development will endure through the institutions and initiatives he established.
