Beloved Radio Personality David 'Ace' Cannon Passes Away at 56

David “Ace” Cannon, a beloved radio personality and co-host of the long-running “Ace & TJ Show,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 56. Cannon, who had been a fixture on Charlotte airwaves for over 25 years, was known for his humor, wit, and dedication to his listeners. His death was announced by his sister, Piper Wilson, and confirmed by HITS 96.1, the iHeartMedia station where he had previously worked.

Cannon and his co-host, Ritchie “TJ” Beams, first teamed up in 1993 at a radio station in Alexandria, Louisiana, before moving to Charlotte in 1998. Their morning show, which blended comedy, banter, and unique stunts, became a staple in the Southeast, earning a loyal following. The duo also founded the “Ace & TJ’s Grin Kids” charity, which provided trips to Disney World for children with disabilities or terminal illnesses.

In September 2024, Cannon abruptly left the show, which later rebranded as “The TJ & Riggins Show.” He resurfaced in October, sharing on social media that he was taking time to focus on his personal life and mental health. Cannon had faced personal tragedies, including the loss of his daughter, Payton, in a car accident in 2020, and a recent separation from his wife, Amanda, with whom he shared a young son, Dax.

Cannon’s passing has left a void in the Charlotte radio community, with fans and colleagues expressing their grief and gratitude for his contributions. A cause of death has not been disclosed. He is survived by his sons, Cade and Dax, his wife Amanda, his ex-wife Shonnette, and his sister Piper.
