By moving Springer, Boston saves $15.4 million in tax penalties and opens up roster flexibility. The Rockets, currently 32-18 and third in the Western Conference, add a young defensive-minded guard to their roster. Springer, a former first-round pick in 2021, has shown flashes of defensive potential but has yet to establish himself offensively.
The Rockets, who had an open roster spot, did not need to send any players in return. This move could also provide Houston with an additional asset in the form of a future second-round pick. Springer now joins a Rockets team led by former Celtics coach Ime Udoka, where he may have an opportunity to contribute in a similar role.
