Ticketmaster UK Boss Defends Pricing Practices Amid Oasis Tour Controversy
The UK boss of Ticketmaster, Andrew Parsons, defended the company’s pricing practices during a hearing with the Business and Trade Select Committee. Parsons stated that ticket prices are “very fairly priced” and are determined by event organizers, not Ticketmaster. This comes after criticism from fans over the “dynamic pricing” system used during the Oasis reunion tour ticket sales last summer, where some fans paid up to £350 per ticket—significantly higher than advertised prices. Parsons denied that prices fluctuated during general sales, emphasizing that prices are agreed upon by humans and not driven by algorithms or bots. He also expressed support for a cap on ticket resale prices but argued that a 30% cap still allows touts to profit. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is currently investigating whether Ticketmaster breached consumer protection laws during the Oasis ticket sale. Meanwhile, MPs urged the CMA to investigate Live Nation, Ticketmaster’s parent company, for its dominant market share in the live events industry.
