Tragedy Strikes Sweden; Deadliest Mass Shooting at Örebro Education Center

At least 11 people, including the gunman, were killed in Sweden’s worst mass shooting at an adult education center in Örebro, approximately 200 kilometers west of Stockholm. The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Campus Risbergska, a school offering adult education, vocational training, and Swedish-language classes for immigrants. The gunman, identified as a 35-year-old unemployed Swedish man named Rickard Andersson, had no prior criminal record or known gang connections. He reportedly acted alone and died at the scene, possibly by turning the weapon on himself.

The victims included seven women and three men, aged between 28 and 68, with diverse nationalities and backgrounds. Among the victims were Bassam Al Sheleh, a 48-year-old Syrian refugee and father of two, and Salim Iskef, a 28-year-old Syrian refugee who was set to marry this summer. Both had fled war-torn Syria for a safer life in Sweden. Authorities confirmed that the victims were from Örebro County, and their identities have been verified, marking a new phase in the investigation.

Police responded to the scene within minutes, describing chaos with injured and deceased individuals. The gunman reportedly hid his weapon in a guitar-shaped case and changed clothes in the school bathroom before opening fire. No warnings preceded the attack, and authorities have not ruled out a possible racist motive. The incident has shaken Sweden, where such violence is rare, prompting Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer to call it an event that “shakes our entire society to its core.” Investigations continue as the nation mourns the deadliest mass shooting in its history.
