Trump Proposes U.S. Takeover of Gaza Strip for Redevelopment

In a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on February 4, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a controversial plan for the United States to “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip. Trump described Gaza as a “demolition site” and proposed that the U.S. would assume long-term ownership, dismantle unexploded bombs, level destroyed buildings, and redevelop the territory into an economic hub. He suggested Gaza could become “the Riviera of the Middle East,” offering jobs and housing for “the world’s people,” including Palestinians.

Trump did not provide specifics on how this plan would be implemented or under what legal authority the U.S. could occupy Gaza. He also did not rule out deploying U.S. troops to the region if necessary. Netanyahu, while not explicitly endorsing the plan, called it a “different idea” that could “change history” and expressed optimism about its potential.

The proposal has sparked widespread criticism and concern. Hamas officials condemned the plan as a “recipe for chaos,” while Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour emphasized that Gaza is the homeland of its people and rejected any attempts to displace them. Saudi Arabia issued a strong statement opposing the displacement of Palestinians and reaffirmed its support for a Palestinian state. Protests erupted outside the White House, with demonstrators chanting slogans against Trump’s proposal.

Critics, including U.S. lawmakers and regional leaders, have labeled the plan as reckless and potentially destabilizing. Some have accused Trump of pursuing a self-serving agenda, with Democratic Representative Jake Auchincloss suggesting the plan could be driven by personal interests, such as turning Gaza into resorts. The proposal has also raised fears of ethnic cleansing and prolonged conflict in the region.

Trump’s announcement comes at a sensitive time, as Israel and Hamas are engaged in ceasefire talks. The plan could further complicate efforts to achieve peace and has drawn sharp reactions from Middle Eastern governments, including Egypt and Jordan, which oppose the resettlement of Palestinians in their countries.
