U.S. Representative Al Green Announces Impeachment Plans Against President Trump Over Gaza Remarks

U.S. Representative Al Green of Texas announced plans to file articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump following Trump’s controversial remarks about a U.S. “takeover” of the Gaza Strip. Speaking on the House floor, Green condemned Trump’s proposal to permanently displace Palestinians and redevelop Gaza into a “Riviera of the Middle East,” calling it a “dastardly deed” and likening it to ethnic cleansing.

Trump’s comments, made during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggested the U.S. could seize control of Gaza and resettle its population. Green, a Democrat representing south Houston, has previously called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict and criticized Trump’s remarks as unacceptable.

This is not the first time Green has sought to impeach Trump. During Trump’s first term, Green filed multiple impeachment articles, including over Trump’s response to the Charlottesville white nationalist rally and his criticism of NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. However, those efforts garnered limited support, with his third attempt receiving only 58 votes in the House.

Democratic leadership has not endorsed Green’s latest impeachment push. California Representative Pete Aguilar, a member of House Democratic leadership, stated that impeachment is not a focus for the caucus. Despite this, Green remains steadfast, emphasizing the need to hold Trump accountable for what he views as unjust and dangerous policies.

The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from some Democrats, who argue it amounts to ethnic cleansing, while Republicans have largely defended Trump’s stance, with House Speaker Mike Johnson calling it a “bold move” in support of Israel. Green, however, insists that standing for justice is paramount, even if it means standing alone.
