Winter Storm Disrupts Midwest and Northeast with Snow, Ice, and Power Outage Concerns

A significant winter storm swept across the Midwest and Northeast, bringing a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain that disrupted travel, caused school closures, and raised concerns about power outages. More than 100 million people across 22 states were under winter weather advisories as the storm moved into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Thursday, impacting major cities such as Chicago, Cleveland, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York.

The National Weather Service reported up to a quarter inch of ice accumulation in western Maryland, West Virginia, and central and southern Pennsylvania, with up to a half inch possible in parts of the central Appalachians, Pennsylvania, and southern New York. Snowfall ranged from 1 to 3 inches in northeastern Pennsylvania, eastern New York, northern Connecticut, western and central Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, with higher elevations seeing up to 6 inches.

The storm created hazardous conditions, with ice accumulation causing treacherous driving conditions and increasing the risk of power outages due to the added weight on trees and power lines. Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph were reported across the Great Lakes, with gusts exceeding 30 mph expected in the Northeast on Friday.

In addition to the ice storm, severe weather events included a confirmed EF-1 tornado in Kentucky, with peak winds of 95 mph, and flooding in parts of Kentucky and West Virginia. Residents in several states also reported “thunder ice,” or freezing rain accompanied by lightning.

Looking ahead, forecasters warn of another storm system expected to bring snow and ice to the upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast beginning Saturday, with the potential for heavier snowfall and icy impacts. February historically sees the most snowstorms in the Northeast, according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

In Massachusetts, the storm brought 2 to 4 inches of snow, with northern areas seeing the highest accumulations. Snow began falling in western Massachusetts between 7 and 9 a.m. Thursday, shifting eastward by late morning and transitioning to sleet and freezing rain in the afternoon. The system cleared by evening, but another significant storm is expected to arrive Saturday night, potentially bringing heavy snow and sleet.
