7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Caribbean Sea, Tsunami Alerts Issued

A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening, approximately 129 miles southwest of George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, and 372 miles west of Kingston, Jamaica. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake occurred around 6:23 p.m. Eastern Time, prompting brief tsunami alerts for several regions, including Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Honduras, and the Cayman Islands. These advisories were later canceled as the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed the tsunami threat had passed.

Local authorities in the Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico urged residents to avoid coastal waters as a precautionary measure. Puerto Rico Seismic Network director Ángel Vázquez emphasized the importance of relying on official information and avoiding rumors. As of late Saturday, there were no reports of significant damage or injuries from the earthquake, according to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. At least 326 people reported feeling the quake to the USGS.

The incident highlights the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of timely communication during natural disasters. While the immediate threat has subsided, officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
