7.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Caribbean Sea, Tsunami Warnings Issued and Later Canceled

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening, prompting tsunami warnings for multiple countries before the alerts were later canceled. The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 20 miles north of Honduras and 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Initial warnings, issued by the U.S. Tsunami Warning System, predicted waves of up to three meters (10 feet) for coastal regions of Cuba, Jamaica, Honduras, the Cayman Islands, and other nearby nations. Advisories were also issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands but were subsequently lifted.

The Cayman Islands government urged residents in coastal areas to move inland as a precaution. However, no immediate damage or injuries were reported, likely due to the earthquake’s offshore location. The USGS noted that large earthquakes in this region are not uncommon, citing a 7.5-magnitude quake in 2018 that caused minor damage and a small tsunami. Authorities confirmed that while minor sea level fluctuations of up to 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) could still occur, the threat of a significant tsunami had passed. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center also confirmed there was no tsunami threat to the mainland U.S. coast.
