Alex Bregman Signs with Boston Red Sox in a $120 Million Deal

Alex Bregman, the longtime Houston Astros third baseman, has reportedly agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to multiple sources. The deal, which includes opt-outs after the first and second seasons, marks the end of Bregman’s free agency journey after a slow market for the two-time All-Star. The Red Sox, who have been seeking to bolster their lineup, will reportedly move Bregman to second base to accommodate Rafael Devers at third.

Bregman, who turned 31 in March, is coming off a 2024 season where he batted .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs. Despite a slow start, his performance improved as the season progressed, helping the Astros secure their seventh American League West title in eight years. However, concerns about his age and a slight decline in plate discipline may have contributed to the shorter-term deal. The Red Sox, who have not reached the postseason since 2021, are banking on Bregman’s experience and offensive prowess to help turn their fortunes around.

The contract includes significant deferrals, reducing its present-day value to approximately $90 million. Bregman, who was originally drafted by the Red Sox in 2012 before opting to attend LSU, will now return to the organization that first saw his potential. His career .272 batting average, 191 home runs, and 663 RBIs make him one of the most consistent hitters in the game. The Red Sox will lose their second-highest draft pick and $500,000 in international signing bonus pool allocation as compensation for signing Bregman, who rejected a qualifying offer from the Astros.

Bregman’s move to Boston reunites him with manager Alex Cora, who previously coached him in Houston. Cora has expressed confidence in Bregman’s ability to transition to second base, a position he has not played regularly since 2019. The Red Sox will face the Astros in a regular-season series in August, adding an extra layer of intrigue to Bregman’s first season in Boston.
